The New Patient Exam

A New Patient Exam, when conducted thoroughly, is unquestionably the most crucial appointment one can have. Many disappointments that individuals experience with dental care stem from an incomplete evaluation and diagnosis.
Unless there is some immediate concern or urgency, the first visit at our office involves:
If you want to read more detail about the New Patient exam appointment click here

  1.  Dental and Medical History Review:  We’ll discuss your dental and medical background to understand any relevant health conditions or concerns.
  2. Oral Cancer Exam: We begin with a thorough oral cancer screening. This helps detect any signs of oral cancer or abnormalities.
  3. Gum Examination (Periodontal Assessment): We assess your gum tissues for color, contours, and texture. Healthy gums appear pink, have a stippled surface, and do not bleed. Signs of periodontal disease (gingivitis or gum inflammation) are noted.
  4. Teeth Examination and detailed charting of your conditions into an odontogram:  Each tooth is examined for stains, chips, cracks, cavities, malformations, excessive wear, and mobility. Existing dental restorations (fillings, crowns, etc.) are also evaluated.
  5. Digital X-rays (If Necessary): X-rays help detect hidden pathology or decay that cannot be seen visually.  Bitewings, periapicals and a Panorex provide detailed information about tooth and bone health.
  6. Bite Analysis: We assess how your upper and lower teeth fit together during biting and chewing. Proper alignment is crucial for comfort and function.
  7. Jaw-Joint Examination:  We check for any abnormalities or signs of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues.  TMJ problems can cause discomfort, headaches, or jaw pain.
  8. Intra-Oral Camera Use: We may use an intra-oral camera to show you any evidence of dental problems or diseases.
  9. Explanation and Treatment Plan:  Based on our findings, we’ll explain any issues and discuss the best treatment approach.  Our goal is to achieve optimal comfort, function, health, and esthetics for your entire chewing system.

Feel free to ask any questions or share additional concerns during your visit!
